Bedford is the second oldest Borough in the United Kingdom and the County Town of Bedfordshire. The siege and eventual destruction of a major Norman castle, religious turmoil, and secret military activities during the Second World War are all part of the towns fascinating history. Today the town remains an important economic and commercial settlement and visitors can enjoy the Victorian landscaped parks and gardens, wonderful riverside restaurants, a year round programme of free festivals and events and a thriving town centre that hosts weekly specialty markets.
